SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
SATURDAY 13th February:
- 9 Ribble St Races - registration begins. Wellington’s premium trolley derby, contestants line-up at 9.30.
- 1.45 Gather for the “Best-dressed Bike” and ‘Prettiest pet” competition at the Island Bay Presbyterian Church. Judged by Fairy Trina.
2.15 The Festival Parade takes off from corner of Avon St and The Parade. Join The Hurriplane, Flint and Amber and their fire engine, the bubble-man, vintage cars and more on the walk to Shorland Park
3 Official Opening of the 26th Island Bay Festival. With Sister Loyola – New Zealand’s gardener of the Year officiating.
3.15 Variety Show begins. Watch the wealth of local talent – from Mr Fungus, The Real Hot Bitches, The City of Wellington Pipe Band through to pop bands the Curly Beans and Poppydust, and many more – as they perform at the Shorland Park band rotunda. Super café, vegetarian food stalls and kids entertainment will be there to meet the needs of families and picnickers.
5 Start of open mike session at the band rotunda. For those budding performers out there – seize this chance at stardom: with help from the Red Dog Saloon Band as our fabulous backing band.
5 Opening of The Miniature of Sound. Tiny nightclub for aspiring DJs. Shorland Park playhouse.
SUNDAY 14th February:
10 Market commences: food, clothes, art, jewellery. It will all be for sale, on The Esplanade – closed to traffic between Trent and Derwent Sts.
10 Swim from the Island Competition. Register at www.islandbay.net.nz. This event kindly supported by the Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club.
10.30 Big-dig: Island Bay Playcentre with the support of Island Bay New World presents this perennial favourite with the children. Come and dig for treasure in front of the old surf club building! Until 1.
10.30 PORSE storytelling tent and Old MacDonalds petting zoo. In the pre-schoolers playground, Shorland park. Until 12 noon.
10- 2 Kayak tasters. The chance to get out for a paddle and explore our coastal paradise! The beach by the bait shed. All equipment and instruction is provided by Canoe and Kayak.
All Day boat rides, marine discovery tours, fairground rides, DOC historical exhibition
!0 – 3 Open day at the Marine Education Centre.
11 – 1 Experiencing Marine Reserves project – snorkelling lessons for children. For a gold coin, get your child started with a wonderful and safe view of the sea.
12 – 2 Marine Discovery Hunt. Friends of Tapu Te Ranga Marine reserve invite you to take part in fun and educational adventure. Prizes include a mask and snorkel set. Island Bay Beach.
12 – 6 Live Music in the Park. Great summer sounds all afternoon in the band rotunda from: The Eggs, Spartacus R, The Aviators, and Ginger Brown
2 The Blessing of the Boats. The flags, the colour, the tradition – beautiful!
4.30 Batucada!!! and The Annual Frocks on Bike Prize-giving award ceremony. Greet the best dressed bicycles as they wheel over the finish line from their coastal journey.
THURDAY 18th Feb:
7 pm Tales of the Sea at Island Bay Library. Roger (Jan) Meecham is an acclaimed Wellington maritime historian and author of two successful non-fiction books of maritime history, “Dangerous Seas and Perilous Waters”. Roger has dived on, and investigated wrecks worldwide and has many a salty dog tale to tell.
FRIDAY 19th Feb:
6 pm Walk along the Eastern hills of Island Bay. Shortcuts and zig-zags through quiet streets and reserves. Join Cr Celia Wade-Brown for a couple of hours after work! Meet at steps to Island Bay Surf Club at 6pm for exploration and lovely views. Friendly dogs welcome! Bring a water bottle.
SATURDAY 20th and SUNDAY 21st Feb:
10 am Harvest Festival at Tapu Te Ranga Marae.
Open day at the Marae with music, Food (hangi, barbecue),kids fun with Woken Bird, powhiri, scarecrows, Stalls-renewable energy-sun, organic food, composting, and worm farms. Tours of the marae, heritage and historical sites, and Manawa Karioi Native Reforestation. See Maori art, Taonga puoro (flutes) and Ta moke (tattoo) Harakeke, taiaha and poi.
Tapu Te Ranga Marae…continues to be built by unemployed Maori youth - it is a strong social, cultural, artistic and environmental statement. A by-product is the world's largest and tallest fully wooden house built of recycled materials. Living Maori in today’s world.
SUNDAY 21st Feb:
2 pm Teddy Bear’s picnic. An afternoon of fun in the park hosted by Island Bay Anglican Church. Band Rotunda in Shorland Park. If wet, the picnic will be held at St Hilda’s. Until 4 pm.
